Frequently asked questions

What is evidence based practice?
In psychology, evidence based practice refers to approaches that are supported by evidence, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). Evidence-based therapies have been evaluated in research trials, and/or draw on psychological concepts that are supported by research.

What can I expect from consultations?
Broadly speaking, evidence-based approaches see a person as a complex whole: an interaction of their thoughts and beliefs, emotions, actions, biology, and environment. Psychological consultations give you a framework for understanding the combination of influences at work in your life, and show you how to alter unhelpful patterns, and create new - more helpful - ones. In collaboration with a therapist you discover new ways of thinking and acting that allow you to live your life more as you would like.

The focus is on giving you knowledge and control. With guidance and support you learn to be your own psychological expert in the long run, at a pace that suits you.

Who can benefit from psychological consultations?
Evidence shows that psychological treatments can be effective for many psychological disorders, where people suffer substantial distress and/or disruption to their lives. Psychological consultations can also be effective for people who do not have a psychological disorder, but would like to enhance their well-being, performance, or quality of life.

In general, psychology is relevant to anyone who wants to make changes in their life. These changes may concern psychological issues, such as improving well-being, gaining confidence, reducing distress, anxiety, or anger, and managing moods. Changes may also concern more practical issues, such as enhancing performance at work or home, improving relationships, changing habits, or making the most of your abilities and potential.

How long does it take?
This varies. Typically people attend around 8-15 sessions, but a simple issue may take only a few sessions, and more complex issues can take longer. The time frame is up to you. It depends partly on your goals. In the initial sessions we will come up with a flexible plan that you are comfortable with.
Your therapy will build on your individual preferences, priorities, and objectives.
