Dr Deepa PatelDeepa is an experienced Clinical Psychologist and Executive Coach who assists clients navigate work, personal and relationship challenges. She tailors her approach to each client for results-oriented growth in career and personal life. Prior to private practice Deepa also spent several years in outpatient psychology clinics in public and private hospitals, and in community mental health centres providing assessment and treatment of a wide range of psychological conditions.
Deepa's qualifications include a combined Doctor of Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney. For her PhD research, Deepa was awarded a scholarship from the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. In addition, Deepa has undertaken training from the Institute of Coaching and Consulting Psychology and awarded a Professional Development Certificate in Executive Coaching.
Deepa uses evidence based strategies to facilitate career and personal growth, harness potential, and boost motivation to reach personal and career goals. She has a special interest in working with high achievers to navigate work, personal or relationship stressors. She has extensive experience working with presenting concerns including: navigating perfectionism or unrelenting standards; negative self talk; confidence and self esteem challenges; procrastination; panic attacks; and understanding and communicating needs and boundaries in personal and work situations. Deepa also has an interest in working with people who seek to understand and break longstanding thinking and relationship patterns that prevent them from living the type of life they value. To this end she has an interest in and has sought specialist training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
We all go through challenging life events, or feelings of being stuck in a life that doesn't reflect our best selves. It is easy to get caught up in an unbalanced work-life trajectory or high stress levels due to competing demands. Deepa helps clients navigate these challenges, drawing on both coaching techniques and her background in Clinical Psychology to manage the symptoms of anxiety and stress and reach psychological equilibrium.
Deepa works collaboratively with her clients with an empathetic and caring attitude. She is dedicated to continuing professional development and keeps up-to-date with evidence-based practice to better assist her clients.
In her previous work at public and private hospitals Deepa conducted individual and group treatment programs for anxiety and depression. Research towards her PhD investigated a new approach to screening for depression and anxiety disorders amongst patients with cancer and she has worked on a large multisite research project that investigated the role of psychosocial factors, including stressful life events, in the development of breast cancer. Clinically, at a hospital-based Cancer Therapy Centre Deepa provided assessment and treatment of inpatients and outpatients with cancer, in consultation with medical and allied health team. Deepa also facilitated the development of a clinical psychology service within the Centre.
Deepa has tutored undergraduate psychology students at university and has presented her PhD research at national and international conferences.
Deepa is fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia, and is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, the Australian Psychological Society College of Clinical Psychologists, and the Australian Psychological Society Interest Group in Coaching Psychology.
