Dr Jennifer BestelJennifer's qualifications are Bachelor of Arts degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Psychology and English Literature from Providence College, Rhode Island USA. She also has Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, San Francisco.
Jennifer is a Registered Clinical Psychologist who has worked for over fifteen years in mental health in the USA and Australia. She has worked in a variety of settings (hospitals, counselling centres and private practice), with a diverse range of people and is skilled in numerous therapeutic approaches.
In particular, Jennifer specialises in complex difficulties arising from a constellation of factors including: family/developmental history; romantic relationships; traumatic experiences and adjustment to new life roles or work situations. Her breadth of experience enables her to customise therapy to an individual's needs and life situation and offer both short term and longer term therapy.
Jennifer has expertise helping people who experience depression and other mood disorders; anxiety and stress; low self-esteem; relationship problems; trauma; adjustment disorders; grief; life dissatisfaction, addiction/substance abuse, coping with chronic pain/health concerns, sexual difficulties and work stress.
A particular area of interest and expertise for Jennifer is couples therapy. She has sought out training from world leaders in the field, and enjoys helping couples to recover from a wide range of relationship difficulties. In the process she seeks to transform relationship challenges into opportunities for greater mutual understanding, closeness and depth.
The foundation of Jennifer's therapeutic training is individual Psychodynamic therapy. She also has training and expertise providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Group and Couples therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Mindfulness Therapy.
Jennifer consistently extends her own professional development via training and supervision.
Jennifer is a warm and personable therapist, with a keen genuine interest in and concern for her clients, and an attuned sensitivity to their needs. Jennifer aims to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where therapist and client(s) work together to reach the client's therapeutic goals. With special regard to couples, Jennifer hopes that arguments can be re-examined as potential starting points for renewed and enriched intimacy and connection.
Jennifer is fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia, and has specialist endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist. She is also a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and is a member of the APS Clinical College.
